A Weekend on the Udupi Coast — Two Days, Properly Planned
A realistic Friday-to-Sunday itinerary for the Udupi coast from Bengaluru: kayaking, beaches, St Mary's Island, the temple, and where to slow down.
Most Bengaluru weekends on this coast go the same way: arrive late on Friday exhausted, spend Saturday driving between five attractions, leave Sunday morning having seen a lot and rested none.
Here is a version that does not do that. It assumes you are coming from Bengaluru, you have a car, and you would like to go home feeling better than when you left.
Friday
Leave early or leave late — do not leave at five in the afternoon. That is the one rule. Friday evening out of Bengaluru is the worst traffic of the week, and you will spend two hours getting to Nelamangala.
Option A — the overnight bus. Board around 10 or 11 pm, sleep, arrive on the coast around dawn. You get a full extra day and you do not drive the Ghats tired. This is the best-value choice by some distance.
Option B — leave Friday morning if you can take the day, and treat the drive as part of the trip. Charmadi Ghat, Belur, lunch at Dharmasthala. See our route guide.
Option C — leave Saturday at 5 am. Also fine. Anything but Friday at five.
Arrive, drop everything, walk to the beach for sunset. Eat outside. Go to bed early — you will want the morning.
Saturday
Early: the mangroves
6:30 am. Be on the water. Mangrove kayaking in the Saligrama backwaters is the single best thing to do on this coast and it is at its best before the day heats up — flat water, birds everywhere, nobody about. One to two hours. Full details in our kayaking guide.
Mid-morning: breakfast, then nothing
9:00 am. Eat properly — this is the coast that does breakfast best.
10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Here is the part most itineraries get wrong. Do not schedule this block. The middle of a coastal day is hot, the light is flat, and the correct response is a pool, a hammock, a book and a long lunch.
If you must move, this is the window for indoor things: the Sri Krishna Matha in Udupi is thirty minutes away, cool inside, and serves a free meal. See the temple guide.
Late afternoon: the coast road
4:30 pm. Now go out. The stretch of NH 66 north to Maravanthe — where the highway runs with the sea on one side and the river on the other — is one of the great short drives in India, and it is twenty minutes away.
Alternatively head south to Kaup, climb the 1901 lighthouse (usually open around 4 to 6 pm) and watch the sun go down from the top.
Evening
Back for dinner. Outside, under the sky. This coast gets genuinely dark, and the stars are worth staying up for.
Sunday
Early: St Mary's Island
Only if the ferries are running — they stop during the monsoon. Take the first boat of the morning from Malpe, about 30 minutes down the coast. The basalt columns are extraordinary, the island is small, and two hours is plenty. Back at Malpe by late morning. See the island guide.
If it is monsoon season, or you would rather not: swap in a long slow morning on the beach and a second breakfast.
Late morning: the fish market, or the beach
Malpe's fishing harbour is a working one and genuinely interesting to walk through. Or go back to the empty stretch at Parampalli and do nothing for two more hours, which is a perfectly respectable use of a Sunday.
Leaving
Aim to be on the road by 2 pm if you are driving back. That puts you through the Ghats in daylight and home at a reasonable hour. Take Shiradi on the return — it is faster and better after dark.
If you took the bus, you have the whole afternoon and an overnight service home.
What this leaves out, deliberately
There are more things to see here than fit in a weekend: Maravanthe, Kollur Mookambika, Barkur's temple ruins, Jomlu Teertha falls, Karkala, Moodabidri, Kundapura. You cannot do them. Trying is what turns a weekend into a chore.
Pick two big things and do them properly. Leave the rest for next time — the coast will still be here.
