Udupi district has something like a hundred kilometres of coastline and almost none of it is developed. That is the good news and the confusing news at once: if you search for "best beach in Udupi" you get a list of ten names with no sense of which one suits the afternoon you have in mind.

Here they are sorted by what you are actually after.

If you want things to do: Malpe

Malpe is the busy one, and that is the point. It is about 6 km from Udupi town, it has a proper beachfront, food stalls, water sports, parking and crowds at the weekend. It is also where the ferry to St Mary's Island leaves from.

Come here if you have children who want ice cream and a banana boat ride, or if you want a beach where things are happening. Do not come here looking for solitude.

If you want the drive: Maravanthe

Maravanthe is the famous one, and it earns it. For a couple of kilometres the highway runs on a thin strip of land with the Arabian Sea on one side and the Souparnika river on the other. You can stand in the middle and see both.

It is about 15 km north of Udupi on the coastal highway. The swimming is not especially good and there is not much shade, but as a place to stop the car at sunset it is hard to beat anywhere in Karnataka.

If you want a lighthouse and a sunset: Kaup

Kaup is roughly 12–17 km south of Udupi, depending on where you measure from. The lighthouse dates from 1901, stands about 27 metres tall, and is usually open to visitors in the late afternoon — around 4 to 6 pm — which is exactly when you want to be up there anyway.

Climb it, watch the sun go into the sea, come down. The rocks around the base are photogenic and slippery in equal measure.

If you want river meeting sea: Delta Beach, Kodi Bengre

Kodi Bengre — often just called Delta Beach — is where the Suvarna river runs into the Arabian Sea, about 9 km from Udupi along the Kodi Bengre Hoode road. A narrow spit separates river backwater from open ocean.

One serious warning: the water at Delta is not safe for swimming. The confluence creates shifting, sinking sand and currents that have killed people. Walk it, photograph it, eat at one of the small places nearby — but stay out of the water.

The backwaters on the sheltered side are calm and good for kayaking and birdwatching.

If you want nobody at all: Parampalli and the northern stretch

This is where we are, so treat the recommendation accordingly — but the numbers speak for themselves. Between Saligrama and the river mouth there are kilometres of open sand with casuarina and dune grass behind it, and on a normal weekday you will see more crabs than people.

There are no facilities. No shacks, no loungers, no lifeguard, no parking attendant. That is the trade. If you want a beach where the only footprints are the ones you just made, this is that beach.

The comparison, in one table

Beach From Udupi Best for Facilities
Malpe ~6 km Families, activity, ferry to St Mary's Full
Delta / Kodi Bengre ~9 km River-meets-sea views, backwaters Some
Kaup ~12–17 km Lighthouse, sunsets Some
Maravanthe ~15 km The coastal drive Roadside
Padubidri ~25 km Blue Flag beach, clean and organised Good
Parampalli / Saligrama ~23 km Solitude, long walks None

Practical things worth knowing

The sea here is not always gentle. The Arabian Sea along this coast has rip currents, and most of these beaches have no lifeguard. Swim where other people are swimming, stay where you can stand, and do not go in at all during the monsoon.

Sunset is the event. The whole coast faces west. Whatever beach you pick, be on it by about half past five in winter.

Shade is rare. Casuarina groves behind some beaches give patchy cover, but bring a hat and plan the middle of the day around being somewhere else.

Best months are October to May. From June to September the sea is rough, the sand is narrow and the rain is serious.

Making a route of it

If you have a full day and a car, the coastal highway makes an easy line: start north at Maravanthe for the drive, come down through Saligrama and Parampalli for the empty stretches, stop at Delta for the river mouth, and finish at Kaup for the lighthouse and the sunset. That is roughly 60 km end to end and a very good day.
