The Best Time to Visit Coastal Karnataka, Month by Month
What the weather actually does on the Udupi coast through the year — the dry season, the heat, the monsoon, and which months are worth booking.
Coastal Karnataka has a simple climate and a dramatic one. There is a long dry season that is close to perfect, a short hot season, and a monsoon that arrives like a switch being thrown. Knowing which is which is most of trip planning here.
The short answer: come between November and February. The longer answer is more useful.
The year in four parts
October to November — the reset
The monsoon pulls back through October. What it leaves behind is the greenest the coast gets all year: the paddy is high, the wells are full, the backwaters are running clear again. Days are warm, evenings are comfortable, and the crowds have not arrived yet.
Early October can still throw a heavy shower. By the end of the month it is reliably dry.
Good for: green landscapes, low prices, having the beaches to yourself.
December to February — the sweet spot
This is the season. Dry, sunny, warm in the day and genuinely pleasant after dark. The sea is calm enough to swim in and the ferries to St Mary's Island are running. Kayaking in the mangroves is at its best. Nights are cool enough to eat outside without wilting.
It is also the busiest and most expensive window, particularly the stretch from about 20 December to the first week of January, when the whole coast books out.
Good for: everything. If you only come once, come now.
March to May — the heat
March is still fine. April and May are hot and humid, and the middle of the day becomes something to hide from rather than enjoy. The sea is warm, the light is harsh, and the air gets heavy as the monsoon builds.
That said, this is when prices drop, the beaches empty out and the coast feels like a place rather than a destination. If you organise your day around early mornings, shade and water, it works. Plan on being in the sea or under a roof from about eleven to four.
Good for: value, quiet, people who genuinely like heat.
June to September — the monsoon
The southwest monsoon hits this coast hard. Not drizzle — days of continuous, heavy, loud rain, with the sea churned brown and the wind driving in off the water.
Most tourist infrastructure shuts. Ferries to St Mary's Island stop. Kayaking operators close. Swimming is dangerous and the beaches shrink to a strip. Our own tents come down for the season.
And yet: the Western Ghats an hour inland are magnificent in the monsoon, the waterfalls are at full power, and there is something worth seeing in a coastline this violent. It is just not a beach holiday.
Good for: the Ghats, photographers, people who love rain. Not for a seaside trip.

Practical planning notes
Book December well ahead. Christmas and New Year on this coast is the one time availability genuinely runs out. With small properties — and most of the good ones here are small — that means weeks, not days, of lead time.
Long weekends fill up. Indian public holidays that create a three-day weekend bring a wave of traffic from Bengaluru. If your dates coincide with one, book earlier and expect higher prices.
Sunset is at roughly the same time all year. Being close to the equator, the day length barely moves. Sunset sits between about 6:15 and 6:45 pm whatever the month, which makes planning easy: aim to be somewhere west-facing by six.
Weekdays are a different coast from weekends. Even in peak season, Monday to Thursday at these beaches is close to deserted. If you have any flexibility at all, use it here — it is the single biggest quality-of-trip lever available to you.
If you can only pick one week
Mid-January. The monsoon is a distant memory, the heat has not arrived, the sea is flat, the light is clean, and the Christmas rush has gone home.
