Manipal — The University Town Next Door

Cafés, bookshops, End Point and one of India's biggest medical campuses, forty minutes from the coast. What Manipal is good for and when it is worth the drive.

Five kilometres uphill from Udupi there is a town that does not feel like anywhere else on this coast. Manipal is a university town — a very large one — and it has the things university towns have: espresso, bookshops, cinema, late-night food, and a population from all over India and well beyond.

It is about forty minutes from us, and it is the answer to two questions our guests ask fairly often: where can I get a proper coffee? and what happens if someone gets ill?

What Manipal is

The Manipal Academy of Higher Education is the centre of it — medicine, engineering, management and more, with a very large student body including a substantial international contingent. The town grew around the campus and largely serves it.

The practical effect for a visitor is that Manipal has a service economy calibrated to young people with some money and cosmopolitan tastes, dropped into the middle of coastal Karnataka.

What it is actually good for

Coffee and café food

This is the real reason to go. After a few days of filter coffee and coconut — both excellent — some people want a flat white, a sandwich and a table with wifi. Manipal has that, in quantity, around the campus and along Tiger Circle.

Bookshops and supplies

Actual bookshops with English stock. Also pharmacies, decent supermarkets, phone shops and anything else you have run out of. If you need something specific and Udupi does not have it, Manipal will.

End Point

A viewpoint at the edge of the plateau looking down over the Swarna river valley and out towards the ghats. Popular at sunset, free, and a pleasant place to walk. Ten minutes from the centre of town.

Food from elsewhere

North Indian, Chinese, Tibetan, Middle Eastern, pizza that is not ours. The student population supports variety that the coast does not.

Cinema

Multiplex screens with current releases, including English-language films. On a very hot afternoon this is a legitimate plan.

The medical point, which matters

Manipal is one of India's major medical centres, with a large teaching hospital and associated specialists. For families with young children, travellers with a condition to manage, or anyone who simply worries about being far from care, this is genuinely reassuring.

It is about forty minutes from us. Worth knowing before you need it, and worth not thinking about again.

Is it worth the drive?

Honestly: not as a sightseeing trip. Manipal is a working town, not a destination. There is no monument, no old quarter, no view that beats the coast.

Go if:

  • You are here for more than four or five days and want a change of texture
  • You want a proper coffee and an hour with wifi
  • You need to buy something the coast does not stock
  • It is April, it is thirty-six degrees, and a cinema sounds perfect
  • You want dinner that is not fish or dosa

Skip if: you have three days. Spend them on the water.

A workable half day

  • 16:00 leave the coast
  • 16:45 End Point for the light over the valley
  • 17:30 coffee and a bookshop
  • 19:00 dinner somewhere non-coastal
  • 21:00 back with us

Going late afternoon avoids both the heat and the worst of the traffic on the Udupi– Manipal road, which is busy at commuting times.

Combining it with Udupi

Manipal and Udupi town are five kilometres apart, so they pair naturally: the Krishna Matha and the old town in the afternoon, up the hill to Manipal for the evening. That is a good, full, unhurried half day and about 60 km of driving in total.

For guests staying a while

If you are with us for a week or two — and some people are, particularly working remotely — Manipal becomes the practical backstop: the place for anything the coast does not have. Most long-stay guests end up going once a week and stopping thinking about it.
