Kollur Mookambika and the Kodachadri Trek — A Full Day From the Coast

The temple in the valley and the 1,343 m ridge above it: distances, the jeep versus the walk, when to go, what the trek actually involves, and how to do both in one day.

Two things sit on top of each other about eighty kilometres inland from us: one of Karnataka's most visited temples, and one of its best-known ridge walks. Most people do one. Doing both in a day is possible if you start early and know what you are getting into.

Kollur Mookambika

The Sri Mookambika temple sits at Kollur, on the banks of the Souparnika river, in the valley below Kodachadri peak. It is about 73 km from Udupi and roughly 80 km / 1 h 45 from us.

This is a major living pilgrimage site, not a monument. Expect crowds, queues, and a lot of movement — particularly at weekends, during festivals, and in the Navaratri period.

Practical notes:

  • Open early morning to early afternoon, then again in the evening. Confirm before

driving out; timings shift with the ritual calendar.

  • Dress code applies. Shoulders and knees covered. Traditional dress is never wrong.
  • Shoes off, photography restricted inside.
  • The Souparnika river beside the temple is part of the pilgrimage — many bathe there

before darshan.

If you have only half a day and want a temple, honestly, the Udupi Krishna Matha is closer and calmer. Kollur is worth the drive when you want the scale of a big pilgrimage site, or when you are going up the mountain anyway.

Kodachadri

The peak sits at 1,343 metres in the Western Ghats, about 20 km from Kollur. It is inside a protected forest area, the views over the ghats are among the best in Karnataka, and there are a couple of small shrines near the top.

There are two ways up, and they are completely different experiences.

The jeep

Shared or private jeeps run from Kollur up a rough forest track to near the summit. It is bumpy, occasionally alarming, and takes roughly an hour and a half each way.

This is the option for most visitors — particularly with children, older parents, or if you also want to do the temple properly the same day.

Jeeps do not run in the monsoon, and the track condition varies.

The trek

The walk is around five hours of proper uphill effort, through forest and then open grassland along the ridge. It is not technical, but it is long, exposed in the upper sections, and hot outside winter.

Do not underestimate it. People start late, run out of water, and end up coming down in the dark. If you walk up, start at first light.

What you need: proper shoes, at least two litres of water per person, sun protection, snacks, and a torch. A guide is sensible — the trail branches and the forest is real forest.

When to go

September to February is the window, and December to February is the sweet spot: clear air, long views, and manageable temperatures.

March to May is hot enough to make the walk genuinely unpleasant.

June to September is the monsoon. The ghats are spectacular and the trail is a mudslide with leeches; jeeps stop running. Do not plan a Kodachadri trip in those months.

Doing both in one day from the coast

It is a long day, but it works:

  • 05:00 leave the coast
  • 06:45 arrive Kollur, park
  • 07:00 temple, early darshan while it is quiet
  • 08:30 breakfast in Kollur
  • 09:00 jeep up to Kodachadri
  • 10:30–13:00 on the ridge — shrines, the viewpoint, sitting down
  • 14:30 back in Kollur, late lunch
  • 17:00 back on the coast for sunset

If you want to walk rather than take the jeep, drop the temple to the end of the day or split it over two days. Trying to do the temple properly and a five-hour climb in one day is how people end up enjoying neither.

Practical warnings worth taking seriously

The ghat roads. Narrow, winding, and busy with pilgrim traffic at weekends. Avoid driving them after dark if you can.

Fuel and cash. Fill up on the coast. ATMs inland are sparse and often out of money.

Leeches in and after the monsoon, on the trek. Long trousers into socks; flick them off, do not pull.

Mobile signal is patchy to absent on the ridge. Tell someone your plan.

Permits. The area is protected forest; access rules can change. Check locally before you commit to the walk.

Quick reference

  • Kollur temple: ~80 km, 1 h 45 from Parampalli
  • Kodachadri peak: 1,343 m, ~20 km beyond Kollur, ~90 km from Udupi
  • Jeep up: about 1 h 30 each way, not in monsoon
  • Trek up: about 5 hours, start at first light
  • Season: September to February; best December to February
  • Bring: water, shoes, sun protection, cash, torch

We can put you with a driver who knows both the ghat road and the jeep operators, which saves a lot of standing around at Kollur.
