Water Sports on the Udupi Coast — Every Option, and What It Costs
Jet ski, parasailing, banana boat, kayaking, surfing and stand-up paddle on the Udupi coast — where each one happens, rough prices, safety, and which are worth it.
The Udupi coast has three quite different water-sports scenes, and they do not overlap much. Knowing which is which saves you a wasted drive.
- Malpe is the loud one: jet skis, parasailing, banana boats, crowds.
- The backwaters are the quiet one: kayaking and slow boats through mangroves.
- Mulki and the southern beaches are the serious one: surfing, taught properly.
Here is all of it in one place.
At Malpe — the full menu
Operators work from the main beach entrance. Walk up, pay, go. No advance booking except on peak weekends.
| Activity | Roughly | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|
| Banana boat | ₹300–500 pp | Yes, with a group. Everyone falls off. |
| Bumper / sofa ride | ₹300–500 pp | Same idea, rougher ride |
| Speedboat | ₹300–600 pp | Short and fast. Fine. |
| Jet ski | ₹500–1,000 | Usually pillion with a driver, not solo |
| Parasailing | ₹1,000–1,500 | The one people remember. Weather dependent. |
| Zorbing | ₹300+ | Novelty |
| Horse ride on the sand | ₹200–400 | Along the beach |
Prices are a range, not a tariff — they move with season and operator. Agree the price before you get on.
Season: roughly November to May. Water sports shut down during the monsoon.
In the backwaters — kayaking and slow boats
The other end of the spectrum entirely, and in our view the better experience.
Mangrove kayaking launches at Parampalli (our lane), Kemmannu, Mattu, Hejamadi and Kodi. Sit-on-top kayaks, guided, one to two hours, flat sheltered water. No experience needed. Best before nine in the morning.
Motorboat trips run from Kemmannu hanging bridge and Kodi Bengre. Easier than kayaking, good with children or less mobile guests. Sunset departures book out.
Stand-up paddle is available at some of the same operators and at Mulki.

Surfing — Mulki and the southern beaches
India's first surf school has been operating at Mulki since 2004, about fifty minutes south of us. Proper multi-day beginner courses, small groups, boat access to the break.
This is not a fifteen-minute holiday activity — it is a real lesson with real progression, and people leave able to stand up.

Swimming — the part nobody covers properly
Everything above involves a boat or a board. Actually getting in the water needs more care than most visitors give it.
The Arabian Sea along this coast has rip currents. There is no lifeguard cover on most beaches, including ours. Every year people drown on this stretch, usually visitors, usually at unpatrolled beaches.
Sensible rules:
- Swim where you can stand, and where others are swimming
- Never swim during the monsoon, June to September
- Never swim at Delta Beach / Kodi Bengre — the river mouth has shifting sand and
confluence currents and is genuinely lethal
- Do not swim after drinking, and do not swim at night
- If caught in a rip, swim parallel to the beach, not against it
The advantage of an empty beach like ours is space and calm — not safety. Same sea, same rules.
Which to pick
With children: motorboat in the backwaters, banana boat at Malpe, paddling on a calm beach.
Couples wanting the memory: parasailing at Malpe, or sunset kayaking in the mangroves — very different moods, both good.
Anyone who wants to learn something: the Mulki surf course. Three days and you have a new skill rather than a photo.
Early risers: mangrove kayaking, without question. Six thirty in the morning on flat water with the birds up is the best hour on this coast.
A realistic day
- 6:30 kayak the mangroves
- 9:00 breakfast
- 10:00–15:00 pool, shade, lunch — it is too hot and bright for anything else
- 15:30 drive to Malpe for the water sports
- 18:00 back north for sunset on an empty beach
- 19:30 dinner outside
We will book the kayaking and the backwater boats for you at the right tide and take nothing for it. Malpe you simply walk up to.
